Leah Nicholson (16) is from Lanercost and in her sixth year at Chetham’s School of Music in Manchester. At the age of 14 Leah gained the Licentiate of the Royal Schools of Music (LRSM) Diploma (Distinction) in Piano Solo Performance. She is a winner of numerous competitions including the International Chopin Festival in Mazovia, Poland, The Polyphonica International Competition in St. Petersburg, Russia, and Chetham’s Concerto Competition playing Rachmaninov’s 2nd Piano Concerto.
Leah loves to perform and has played solo at such venues as Steinway Hall (London), Sage (Gateshead), Petrikirche (St. Petersburg, Russia), Kadriorg Palace (Tallinn, Estonia), Hexham Abbey Festival, Brampton Classical Series, Newby Festival of the Arts, Lit&Phil (Newcastle), Carlisle Cathedral and other venues. She enjoys making music with her friends and is a winner of Chetham’s Chamber Ensemble Competition.
Leah has participated in masterclasses with Martin Roscoe, Murray McLachlan, Anthony Hewitt, Kathryn Stott, Galina Sandovskaya and Noriko Ogawa.
Recently Leah played Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto no.1 with the City of Carlisle Orchestra conducted by Leon Reimer, and performed for Classic FM at the newly built Stoller Hall, Manchester.
After winning the Keldwyth Award Leah is continuing her piano study with Dr. Murray McLachlan at Chetham’s School of Music. She is actively performing and her next Cumbrian appearances will be a Solo Piano Recital for the Carlisle Music Society on Thursday 22nd February 2018, 7.30 pm at St. Cuthbert’s Church, Carlisle and playing Rachmaninov’s Third Piano Concerto with the City of Carlisle Orchestra on Saturday 24th March, 7.30 pm at St. John’s Church, Carlisle.
